Anita Catarina Malfatti (1889–1964) was a Brazilian painter
who introduced European and American modernist techniques to Brazil. She went to the United States in 1915, shortly after the Armory Show—an exposition of modernist art that was both scandalous and extremely influential—had changed the nature of art in that country. She studied at the Independent School of Art in New York, where she experimented with expressionism, until 1916, when she returned to Brazil.Malfatti took part in the Week of Modern Art (Semana de Arte Moderna) in 1922. The Week was the organized start of Modernismo, the Brazilian modernist movement, within which Malfatti became a key figure.
Emiliano Di Cavalcanti-Born in Rio de Janeiro, Di Cavalcanti moved to São Paulo in 1917. At that time, São Paulo was a more industrial and less artistic city than Rio de Janeiro, but Di Cavalcanti became involved with a group of young artists and intellectuals, based in São Paulo, who would later be the chief participants in Brazilian Modernism. The movement began early in 1922, when Di Cavalcanti, along with Mário de Andrade and his Group of Five, organized the Week of Modern Art, a celebration of the São Paulo modernist movement. Di Cavalcanti embodies the tendency of Brazilian modernists to be pulled in two directions: his subject matter consists of particularly Brazilian themes (mostly mulatto women), but his chief artistic influences are the European modernists and Pablo Picasso most of all. He experienced the European movement first-hand while living in Paris and Montparnasse between 1923 and 1925.
